Remember, we are the first generation that can end poverty, and we should refuse to miss this historic opportunity. With your help, we can unite the six billion people on this planet to make the world leaders do exactly what we say; to create a better world and a better future for all.
A billion people worldwide still survive on less than a dollar a day. Could you? Probably not, so why expect others to do so? Is anybody doing anything to end poverty and make the world a better and safer place for all? The answer is yes!
At the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000, 189 Heads of State and Governments, promised to work together to make a better world for all by 2015. On behalf of their people, they signed the Millennium Declaration, promising to "free men, women and children from the dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty". 8 Millennium Development Goals were adopted, committing rich and poor countries to work together in a global partnership to end extreme poverty and hunger, ensure that all boys and girls complete primary school, promote gender equality, improve the health of mothers and children, reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, and protect the environment.
With all the money, technology and know-how the world has at its disposal, this should not be a problem, should it? So why are still today 1.2 billion people surviving on less than one dollar a day, over 11 million children under the age of five dying each year from preventable diseases, and 7,000 young people contracting HIV/AIDS every single day? Quite simple: a lack of political will to make the goals a reality.
